Los Angeles Kings Stanley Cup Celebration Has Philadelphia Flavor

There's definitely some Philadelphia flavor in Los Angeles tonight. The Kings are Stanley Cup champions, and it's a bit awkward to be a Flyers fan like myself, but how fitting is it that Simon Gagne passed the Cup to Mike Richards, who passed it to Jeff Carter.

Oh, and yes, Gagne almost dropped it.

But while the Flyers storyline is a big one -- don't forget Ron Hextall, John Stevens, Dean Lombardi and Justin Williams as former Flyers as well -- it's not the real storyline. The Kings were led by a phenomenal playoff performance from Dustin Brown. They were led by an admirable Conn Smythe Trophy winner in Jonathan Quick.

They overcame more than just about any other Cup champion in history -- a coach being fired, barely squeaking in at the end of the season, beating the No. 1 seed in the West, the No. 2 seed in the West and the No. 3 seed in the West. They did it in impressive fashion and they are absolutely deserving Stanley Cup Champions.

Auburn Shooting: Police Surround House Looking For Suspect Desmonte Leonard

A situation is developing regarding the pursuit of the prime suspect in the shooting that took place at Auburn University and left three people dead Saturday night. Police have surrounded the location where they believe prime shooting suspect Desmonte Leonard was hiding. According to Charles Goldberg of the Birmingham News, a SWAT team entered the building on Monday at approximately 10:00 p.m. ET.

The Associated Press reports that the police were led to the location via 911 calls.

Authorities received two 911 calls that someone who looked like suspect Desmonte Leonard was in or near the house, Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange told reporters. One of the calls came from the owner of the home.

The latest reports, coming via Jay G. Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser, state that the suspect is believed to be hiding out in the attic of the home. Fire and Rescue team members have entered the home carrying fiberglass poles designed to rip sheet rock. It is possible that the authorities may be attempting to tear the floor of the attic out from under the suspect.

Honduras standing in way of Canada's World Cup soccer dream

Canada doesn’t often win in Cuba – its 1-0 victory last Friday was just the second time this nation has triumphed on the shores of the Caribbean’s most infamous island – but then Canada doesn’t often qualify for the World Cup either: just once in 55 years of trying.

Still, despite getting a leg up on the opposition – a solid three points in the first game of a four-team, double round-robin World Cup qualifying phase – Canadian coach Stephen Hart is not about to connect the two events, and neither should anyone else.

“We’ve achieved nothing,” he said Monday as he prepared his troops for a home encounter Tuesday with Honduras, which beat Canada twice on the way to qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa two years ago.

While many soccer fans in Canada are in the throes of passion that can only be provided by the big international tournaments, with the European championship the flavour of the month, Hart can only look on enviously and hope some of them spill over into BMO Field in Toronto on Tuesday night.

Through its first six games, Euro 2012 attracted an average of 707,000 viewers on TSN, a marked contrast to the game in Cuba last Friday that barely scratched 50,000 on Sportsnet. And with an exhibition draw with the United States last month drawing 15,000 to BMO, Hart will be hoping for at least that to roar Canada on to a significant step toward advancing to the final round of World Cup qualifying.

It won’t be easy. After losing its opener at home to Panama last Friday, Honduras will be “a wounded animal” when it turns up at BMO Field, although two consecutive clean sheets should be of some comfort, Hart said.

Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan, who was called on at short notice last Friday after starter Lars Hirschfeld was sent off for handling outside the area, will be given just his seventh start for the national team, but even with a relative lack of experience compared to Hirschfeld, his teammates have no doubt he can do the job.

“Thankfully there is no difference,” captain Dwayne De Rosario said of the switch. “They’re both calibred ’keepers and you saw Milan come in and fill the void when Lars unfortunately took a questionable red and he did fantastic for us, so you need that same type of mentality and leadership from him in goal.

“We’re confident with him back there and we have a very deep goalkeepers right now and we’re very fortunate to have that and we’re not expecting the level to drop in any way.”

Veteran PSV Eindhoven midfielder Atiba Hutchinson may also get a start for Canada this time after coming off the bench in Cuba having recently recovered from a knee injury, and based on Hart’s scouting report on the Hondurans, every bit of experience could be invaluable.

“A lot of athleticism and technical ability in key positions,” he said of the opponent Tuesday.

“They have some good wide play and of course [Carlos] Costly up front is a big man and a handful, especially crosses in the air, we’re going to have to eliminate [them] as much as possible, and of course deal with him when crosses do come in.”

The reward for a win is huge, as with six points Canada would be a long way toward the 10 or so it will take to ensure moving on, and with a summer break to follow for European-based players, getting it at home would be the perfect sendoff.

Hodgson backs England to improve

Coach Roy Hodgson felt England's 1-1 draw against group favourites France was a "good platform" on which to build at Euro 2012.

Both sides enjoyed periods of dominance in energy-sapping heat in Donetsk, with England taking the lead through Joleon Lescott before Samir Nasri equalised.

"This gives us a good platform," Hodgson said after the Group D opener.

"Hopefully we'll get fitter. The more we train and get matches under our belts the fitter we'll become."

He continued: "I have to be proud of their display. No player let us down. I was confident the players would not let us down."

Euro 2012: England players happy with France draw

Hodgson, who took charge of just his third England match and first competitive fixture, said he was pleased at how his side coped against a side unbeaten in two years.

"France are one of the favourites in the group," added the 64-year-old former West Brom manager.

"They'd gone 21 games unbeaten before today and people were tipping them to be potential winners of the tournament.

"We can't deny on paper they might be the hardest game, but I've got a lot of respect for Sweden and Ukraine.

"I've got to be very proud of that performance. Maybe that final ball needs to improve and we were maybe a bit anxious in the final third.

"But there were good signs of a team wanting to do well."

Hodgson also paid tribute to 18-year-old Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who was the surprise selection in the starting XI.

"He did quite well, he was dangerous," added the England coach.

"He has to be happy with his performance, but it was a great team performance. Everyone did their best to keep us in the game.

"Two or three times he skipped past players.

"I said to him before the game that it's a big occasion, but there will be several more big occasions so don't get too hung up about this. Do what you do. There will be lots more games for him in an England shirt."

England face Sweden on Friday, before concluding their group campaign against co-hosts Ukraine next Tuesday.

Patrice Evra admitted his France side had been left frustrated by England's tactics during the 1-1 draw in the opening Euro 2012 Group D game.

The Manchester United full-back claimed it was like watching Chelsea's Champions League semi-final rearguard action against Barcelona.

Evra said: "I think we played much better than England, but in the end it was a draw and we are a bit frustrated.

"They played in the way that Chelsea played against Barcelona."

Draw didn't flatter England - Hodgson

Joleon Lescott gave England the lead but Manchester City team-mate Samir Nasri equalised to ensure both teams take a point into their second games in Group D.

"At times it was like there were 15 bodies on the pitch," continued the 31-year-old.

"People laugh and maybe they want England to play more football, but if they win the tournament playing like that, they will be happy."

France coach Laurent Blanc said his side will have to start better in their remaining group games.

"England were excellent for the first 20 minutes," he said. "We took a while to get into the game and, as ever, we were punished.

"Perhaps it was inexperience but we didn't start the game as we'd hoped to. Had we not reacted we could have lost this game.

"I hope that doesn't happen again. In the next game, we have to get into it right from the outset."

Nasri, who was awarded the man-of-the-match award, was delighted to have beaten his Manchester City team-mate Joe Hart with a 20-yard equaliser six minutes before the break.

"When Franck Ribery gave me the ball, the England defence was sitting back," said Nasri.

"I decided to take a shot but Joe Hart knows me from Manchester City and knows that in that situation, I normally open my foot. This time I closed it a little bit so I am happy with how it worked out."

Nasri celebrated scoring by putting his finger to his lips, with press and Twitter speculating about who the gesture was aimed at.

"It's between him and his critics," said Blanc. "It's a personal thing, I don't want to get involved. He was happy to have scored a goal. You'll have to ask him to whom it was addressed."

Ukraine can qualify - Shevchenko

Ukraine's two-goal hero Andriy Shevchenko believes his side's 2-1 victory over Sweden has given them a good chance of qualifying from Group D.

The 35-year-old took his international goal tally to 48 from 108 caps in Kiev on Monday as the co-hosts won to top a group which also includes England.

Ukraine next play France, who drew 1-1 with England, before facing Roy Hodgson's men on Tuesday, 19 June.

"We showed character and now have good chances to qualify," said Shevchenko.

The 35-year-old former AC Milan and Chelsea striker, who is in his second spell with Dynamo Kiev in his native country, rolled back the years with two headed goals in the space of six second-half minutes to lead his side to victory after Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given Sweden the lead in Kiev's Olympic Stadium.

"I feel great. I feel 20 years old, not 35. it was an historic game for us, and it's a victory," said Shevchenko, who will retire from international football after Euro 2012.

"It's such an important competition. Thank you to everybody who supported me. It was a very long walk because I had a lot of problems before the European Championship."

There was doubts as to whether Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin would select Shevchenko, who was European Footballer of the Year in 2004 but is not the force he once was, as age and a string of injuries have caught up with him.

However, Blokhin's was rewarded for his decision to select the striker, who was given a standing ovation by the vociferous crowd inside the Olympic Stadium when he was substituted 10 minutes from full-time.

Sweden coach Erik Hamren felt his side should have done more to impose their authority on the game. He also believed his side were wasteful in the latter stages as they went in search of an equaliser.

"We knew how they would play and it was our performance which was not up to scratch. You need 11 players right on their game and we only had five or six in the first half," said 54-year-old.

"We knew the crosses would come in - and we were up against a super player. Technically and tactically we didn't cut it. We should have scored with the good chances we had at the end."

Sweden goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who also saw a header hit the post in the first-half, said: "We have three games to play here, it's not just one game.

"There's still two games left and we still have the two games to get a result. We need to play a better game than we did today."

France and England finish level at 1-1

France and England cancelled each other out in a 1-1 Euro 2012 Group D draw that began full of energy and invention but slowed into a tight clash as the players tired in the Ukraine heat on Monday.

England were full of running early on and, after James Milner missed a sitter, they went ahead on the half-hour when centre back Joleon Lescott met a Steven Gerrard free kick to head in his first international goal.

Samir Nasri brought France deservedly level with a well-struck low drive from the edge of the box in the 39th minute, moments after England keeper Joe Hart had produced a great save to keep out a thundering Alou Diarra header.

Ukraine take on Sweden in the other Group D game in Kiev later on Monday to complete the first round of matches.

US Open Golf 2012: Parity Holds In Tiger Woods's Absence

As Carl Steward of the Silicon Valley Mercury News points out, no golfer has been able to take advantage of Tiger's absence. The last 14 majors have had 14 different individual champions, the second-longest streak without a repeat champion since the 1934.

If a new champion is crowned at the Olympic Club in San Francisco next weekend, this streak will be tied with a four-year run that began in 1998 for the longest streak.

Of the top 25 golfers in the world, 12 are among the 14 who have won major championships in the last four years. The other 13 are perhaps the biggest difference in modern golf, as there is a much larger pool of players capable of winning a major than at any point in the history of the sport.

Look out – Croatia can beat anybody

Before the game started, Croatia had a singer on the field and cheerleaders, too, dancing to rouse the supporters. Those in the stands did indeed sing, and danced with their characteristic fervour. In Ireland’s case, their cheerleaders were merely 20,000 supporters in the stands repeatedly chanting, “You’ll never beat the Irish!” to instigate the necessary atmosphere. For a time, it was deafening.

That chant proved to be a loud but empty boast.

This was not the glamour game on Sunday but after Spain’s 1-1 draw with Italy there was an awful lot at stake here. A winner would lead Group C, a powerful tonic to take into the next game, with Ireland playing Spain on Thursday and Croatia playing Italy the same day. Now it’s Croatia that goes forward with some confidence about emerging from this group and on to the quarter-finals. It’s simple – three points for a win and only one for a draw.

Sloppy defending by Ireland had them behind after three minutes. And the context to the goal would come to define the game – Ireland’s defending varied only from the feeble to the frantic. Croatia forced a corner, the resulting activity in its penalty area didn’t look dangerous for Ireland but Mario Mandzukic managed to steer his weak header into the net from 12 yards.

The goal was a shocking lapse, given Ireland’s results going into this game. Manager Giovanni Trapattoni stuck emphatically with the team that qualified for this tournament and the 4-4-2 formation used throughout the qualifying campaign. The record promised tight defence and fortitude. Nothing of the sort transpired here.

Well, maybe for 15 minutes the fortitude was there. Ireland’s equalizer was a classic Trapattoni tactic. Ireland was awarded a free kick to the left of the Croatia goal. Sean St. Ledger drifted in late and unmarked to meet Aiden McGeady’s cross. St. Ledger scored an identical goal against Italy in Ireland’s last World Cup qualifying run.

Try as the Irish might, however, Croatia bossed the game from midfield. Luka Modric was by far the most dangerous Croat player, patrolling the centre circle and spraying passes with unerring accuracy. Every time he collected the ball it seemed he could bamboozle Ireland’s back four. It didn’t take much.

Ireland had got itself back in the game with the goal, but another bewildering and serious lapse made Ireland look thoroughly mediocre. During some confusion in the penalty box, Croat Nikica Jelavic fired what looked like a desperate shot past Shay Given and into the Irish net. He was surely offside? The Irish players just stopped, but Jelavic was deemed onside and no amount of arm waving and puzzled looks changed that. It was just before half-time and the game was as good as gone for Ireland.

The second half had barely found a rhythm when a second Mandzukic header, which went in bizarrely, off Given’s head, sealed the night for Croatia.

In response to the three-goal deficit, Trapattoni did what he rarely does – he put more strikers on the field. Simon Cox and Jonathan Walters came on, and looked lively on entrance but nothing worked for Ireland. It had tenacity for a while but was soundly outclassed in technique.

Next, Croatia faces the two great teams of technique and guile in Spain and Italy. Those games will be far bigger challenges than this. But this team is capable of defeating both. Ireland can have few complaints. And its supporters really must stop chanting “You’ll never beat the Irish!” It`s so over.

Maradona’s Al Wasl fall in GCC Champions League final

Diego Maradona’s first season at Al Wasl went from bad to worse on Sunday.

Desperate for some silverware to offset an otherwise disappointing season, Maradona was counting on his team beating Bahrain’s Al Muharraq to win the GCC Champions League crown. After all, his Dubai side was up 3-1 after the first leg and playing at home in front of a packed stadium in the second leg Sunday.

But Al Muharraq had other ideas.

Jamal Abraro closed the gap in the ninth minute with a header that got past Al Wasl keeper Majed Naser. Naser, who earlier this year was given a lengthy ban for hitting an opposition coach, responded to the goal by head-butting an Al Muharraq player, which got him sent off.

Yasser Salim drew Al Wasl level in the game for a 4-2 aggregate lead with a long strike in the 45th. But Al Muharraq answered with two second-half goals to take a 3-1 lead on the night and crucially to draw even at 4-4 on aggregate.

Al Wasl’s Essa Ali was later involved in another head-butting incident in the 78th and was also sent off.

Al Muharraq tried to press its numerical advantage in the final 12 minutes, but couldn’t convert any of several good chances.

The match went to penalties and Al Muharraq sealed the win when keeper Abdullah al-Kaby blocked a shot by Mubarak Hassan. Argentina international Juan Ignacio Mercier also missed for Al Wasl.

“We achieved an important win today,” said Al Muharraq Coach Eisa Sadoon, whose team has links to the country’s royal family. “It’s not only for Al Muharraq but for all of the kingdom of Bahrain. We have been waiting 27 years to win this and we were able to achieve this.

“It was a tough match especially after a 3-1 loss at home. We managed to take control of the game and contain Al Wasl’s foreign players. The sending off of Nasser gave us a boost.”

A dejected Maradona praised Al Muharraq and said his game plan was thrown into disarray when Nasser was sent off.

“The opponent deserved the win today no doubt about it,” Maradona said. “They took the match out of our hands and took total control of the midfield. They were more focused and more organized and may have won it on their own before penalties. This is the truth. Of course, it’s very different playing 11 on 11 rather than 11 on 9.”

The defeat caps a disappointing season for the man who led Argentina to the 1986 World Cup and is regarded among the greatest ever players. He signed a two-year deal in May with promises of returning Al Wasl to glory but the team finished the season in eight place in the 12-team league and without any trophies.

“The circumstances tonight didn’t help and I couldn’t have done any better,” Maradona said. “I don’t regret anything I did this season. We did all we can and I will continue. I have a commitment with Al Wasl and preparations are already under way for next season.”

Mattocks' double leads Whitecaps past Dynamo

Darren Mattocks scored a goal in each half Sunday as the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated the Houston Dynamo 3-1 in Major League Soccer play.

Jordan Harvey had the other goal for Vancouver (6-3-4), which was playing its first game since May 26.

Houston substitute Macoumba Kandji replied for the Dymano (4-4-4).

Mattocks scored his second of the game to make it 2-0 for Vancouver in the 66th minute.

The Jamaican forward took a feed from Gershon Koffie and fired a right-footed shot past Tally Hall.

The Houston goalkeeper was forced to bat away a line drive off the foot of Koffie in the 71st minute to keep his team’s hopes alive at 2-0.

The Dynamo cut the Vancouver lead in half in the 83rd minute when Kandji took a pass from Brian Ownby and fired a shot past Whitecaps ’keeper Joe Cannon for his first goal with Houston.

But Vancouver put the game out of reach in the 88th minute when Harvey took a pass from Koffie and beat Hall for the defender’s first goal since 2010.

Mattocks, the second overall pick in the 2012 MLS Superdraft, opened the scoring in the fourth minute with his second goal in as many games.

Young-Pyo Lee rushed down the right side and centred the ball to a streaking Mattocks, who one-timed a volley past Hall.

The 21-year-old Mattocks also scored the tying goal two weeks ago when he came on to score in the 90th minute of a 1-1 tie with Portland.

Mattocks had a great scoring opportunity in the 22nd minute after taking a feed from Sebastian Le Toux but fired a bouncing ball high over the net.

Houston’s Brian Ching blocked a Cannon goalkick in the 28th minute but failed to take advantage, firing the ball high and wide.

Cannon made up for that mistake in the 41st minute with a great save off Bobby Boswell. The Houston defender had lots of time after taking a cross at the top of the box, but a Cannon jumped high and to his right to punch the ball out of harm’s way.

In the second half, the Whitecaps weathered an early storm by the Dynamo before taking control.

Vancouver’s Davide Chiumiento had a nifty play just prior to the 60-minute mark but his shot slid just wide of the post.

The game was the only contest on the MLS schedule. Many players are away from their clubs, currently participating in 2014 World Cup qualifying tournaments.

The Whitecaps were without Omar Salgado, who was injured while playing for the U.S. under-20 team last week. Michael Boxall is currently with New Zealand’s national team for qualifying. Vancouver was also without the injured duo of Atiba Harris and backup goalie Brian Sylvestre.

Houston was without Geoff Cameron, Canadian international Andre Hainault, Je-Vaughn Watson and Jermaine Taylor, who are all involved in qualifying.

Notes : Cannon made three saves on the day, while Hall finished with four. ... With the win, Vancouver moved past Colorado into fourth place in the Western Conference. ... Houston, which had a four-game undefeated streak snapped, missed a chance to move from seventh to fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. ... Attendance at B.C. Place Stadium was 18,811. ... UEFA charges Russia over fan violence at Euro 2012

UEFA has charged the Russian football association with “improper conduct” of its supporters, who were filmed fighting with stadium stewards after a European Championship match.

UEFA says it is seeking more evidence to investigate reports of “alleged abuse directed at Czech Republic players” during Russia's 4-1 win in Wroclaw on Friday.

Anti-racist monitors appointed by UEFA reported Saturday that fans verbally abused Czech defender Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is black.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will review the case against Russia on Wednesday.

The charge says the alleged improper conduct relates to “crowd disturbances, the setting off and throwing of fireworks and the display of illicit banners.”

Messi hat-trick gives Argentina 4-3 win over Brazil

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick as Argentina beat Brazil 4-3 in a lively friendly on Saturday, dealing a blow to the Brazilians as they wrapped up their preparations for the London Olympics.

Brazil took the lead in the 23rd minute when a quickly taken free-kick found Romulo, who banged in the goal as Argentina’s defenders appealed in vain for offside.

Argentina equalized in the 31st minute after Gonzalo Higuain robbed Brazilian captain Sandro and fed Messi, who shot low into the corner of the goal.

Within three minutes, the diminutive striker put Argentina 2-1 up, running on to a pass from Angel di Maria and rounding Brazilian goalkeeper Rafael Cabral.

Brazil got back in the end-to-end game in the second half when Oscar scored from close range after 56 minutes and then reclaimed the lead when Hulk took advantage of a fumble by Argentine goalkeeper Sergio Romero to score.

But Argentina stormed back quickly as Federico Fernandez headed in from a corner in the 75th minute before Messi scored the best goal of the game with a trademark run and shot from outside the penalty area in the 84th minute.

Brazil’s Marcelo and Argentina’s Ezequiel Lavezzi were sent off for an altercation in injury time.

The game was played in front of a sell-out crowd of nearly 82,000 at Meadowlands Stadium, home of New York’s two American football teams, the Giants and the Jets.

Italy Vs. Ireland, 2012 European Championships: Is It Slovakia All Over Again?

You know what really doesn't make Italy fans giggle? Mentioning the 3-2 loss to Slovakia that caused them to crash out of the 2010 World Cup. The azzurri were sitting in exactly this position this time two years ago, having drawn their first two matches in the group stages. This time around, though, Italy can take small comfort in knowing that at least they're not finishing bottom -- Ireland has already taken that dubious honor. Yet if Italy can't manage a win on Monday in Poznan, they're flashing back to Johannesburg once again.

It should be simple enough. Not only have Ireland not managed a single point in Group C, but they haven't looked remotely capable of taking points off their competitors. The defence is a shambles (which anyone who's been forced to spend a season watching Aston Villa should have been able to tell you before this even started). The attack is what you would expect from Giovanni Trapattoni. Watching Ireland, you really wonder...how'd they even get here? And then you remember they beat Estonia in the playoffs.

Italy have the distinct advantage of looking competent -- most of the time, at least. The jury's still out on Mario Balotelli, but it's unlikely he'll start on Monday. Instead, Cesare Prandelli might revert back to a 4-3-1-2, with Antonios Cassano and Di Natale leading the attack. The defence will be totally revamped, with Andrea Barzagli fit again, stepping in to replace Leonardo Bonucci. Christian Maggio and Emanuele Giaccherini, both who have disappointed in the first two matches, make way for Federico Balzaretti and Ignazio Abate as fullbacks, with Daniele De Rossi moving back to midfield.

Barring any meltdowns, this is a team that should be able to easily sweep aside Ireland. Yet even if Italy wins 10-1, their fate is not entirely in their own hands (feet?). A 2-2 draw between Spain and Croatia -- or 3-3, 4-4, you get the idea -- keeps Italy from advancing. Oh, the irony...Italy are dependent on two teams not fixing a match.

Germany’s Gomez finally shines on big stage

Germany’s Mario Gomez has been criticised for failing to shine on the big stage but the forward did just that on Saturday when his goal secured a 1-0 victory over Portugal and gave Joachim Loew’s side a perfect start at Euro 2012.

Germany’s Gomez finally shines on big stage

Long regarded as merely a back-up for Miroslav Klose and an underperformer at the big tournaments, the 26-year-old grabbed his chance at the first opportunity to strengthen his claims to be Germany’s first choice striker in the tournament.

Gomez, a surprise starter on Saturday with Klose on the bench, was in the right place at the right time, as he has done so often for his club Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga and the Champions League this season, to head in the only goal on 72 minutes.

Until then the Germans had found their attacks stymied by a gutsy and clever Portuguese defence.

Gomez himself was shut out and frustrated by Portugal c entral defenders Pepe and Bruno Alves, and was about to be taken off for Klose when he nodded in Sami Khedira’s cross.

Had he not scored German media would be awash with stories about his failure to rise again to the occasion. It was a similar case at Euro 2008 where his claim to fame was a spectacular miss against Austria.

At the 2010 World Cup he was also upstaged by Thomas Mueller, who was the tournament’s top scorer.

FIRST CHOICE

Now, however, he can expect to be the first choice after Loew opted to start with him instead of Klose, who is only five goals away from Germany’s all-time goal scoring record of 68.

Gomez took his tally to 23 international goals but none of the other 22 will have done so much for his reputation as a lethal finisher than the one on Saturday.

While he may not have been as effective in the past for the national team, he has become irreplaceable for Bayern, netting 12 goals in the Champions League and another 26 in the Bundesliga this season.

He helped them reach the Champions League final and converted a penalty in the final shootout against Chelsea when other big name players like Bastian Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben failed to do so.

A year earlier he was crowned the Bundesliga top scorer.

“I’ve had two successful years behind me,” a beaming Gomez said. “I’m very very happy...I had a good feeling from the start here and I wanted to give something back for the trust (the coach put on me).”

He can expect to hold on to his starting spot now as long as he keeps scoring.

With a European Championship quarter-final spot on the line, both teams deny they will willfully play for a scoreline that would eliminate Italy regardless of its result against Ireland in the other Group C match.

The topic of the possible collusion has been raised numerous times in the last few days, mainly by Italian media who speculate that a preconceived result would benefit both conspirators by taking away Italy’s chances altogether.

“There’s no point in even talking about it,” Spain striker Fernando Torres said Sunday. “It’s all speculation. Speaking about it puts the very reason for why we are here in doubt. That’s not what football is about.”

That hasn’t stopped the questions from coming, and coming, and coming. To Spain, and to Croatia, and, of course, to Italy.

“We are sportsmen. We are parents. We are normal people. But we don’t even think about this kind of fixing the draw,” Croatia coach Slaven Bilic said. “The whole of Italy and the whole of Europe can be calm, they don’t have to think about it.

“I just say to [the] Italian team and Italian people, trust in us and trust in what I said.”

Although it’s unlikely that any team will purposely concede two goals at such a major tournament, Spain coach Vicente del Bosque did allow for a reluctance to press for a winner if the score just so happens to reach 2-2.

On its way to winning the 2010 World Cup, Spain beat Chile in the group stage, a result that eliminated Switzerland. Chile, coached by the attack-minded Marcelo Bielsa, suddenly sat back as neither team pushed hard for more goals.

“Chile gave up on attacking, on achieving a draw, and that surprised me a lot. Those are situations that happen in a game, it worked for them,” said Del Bosque, whose team hasn’t given away two goals in a match in 15 games — including title-winning runs at Euro 2008 and the 2010 World Cup. “But for something like that to happen again does no service to football.”

Although it would be tough to agree on a 2-2 draw before the match even starts, it’s not all that surprising that the Italians are worried. Eight years ago, Italy beat Bulgaria in its final group match at Euro 2004 but was eliminated when Sweden and Denmark drew 2-2.

But perhaps the most notorious example of teams settling for a result came at the 1982 World Cup. West Germany scored early against Austria and the teams played out a mundane 1-0 match that eliminated Algeria, which had beaten Chile the previous day. FIFA changed its regulations after that match to ensure decisive games were played simultaneously to avoid such a situation again.

Talk of silent pacts, however, is largely confined to matches that end with big victories rather than high-scoring draws.

Argentina has long been accused of conspiring to beat Peru 6-0 at the 1978 World Cup, where a victory by at least four goals eliminated archrival Brazil.

Spain has also been questioned in the past. The Spanish qualified for Euro 1984 with a 12-1 victory over Malta. The Spanish — who eventually lost to France in the final — needed to win by 11 goals and managed the result despite holding only a 3-1 lead at halftime.

On Monday, Spain is guaranteed of a spot in the quarter-finals with any draw, while Croatia could still be eliminated with a 0-0 or 1-1 result.

But whatever happens in that match won’t affect the way Italy coach Cesare Prandelli approaches his game against Ireland.

Dutch pay heavy price for sloppy finishing

Among the favourites for Euro 2012 and boasting two of the hottest forwards on the continent, Netherlands produced a shocking display of finishing in their 1-0 defeat by Denmark on Friday that could cost them dear.

A statistic of 28 attempts on goal but only eight on target tells its own story as Danish goalkeeper Stephan Andersen was barely tested all night despite waves of orange attacks lapping around his penalty box.

Robin van Persie, the English Premier League’s top scorer, barely put a foot right all night while the Bundesliga’s leading marksman, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, was unable to change the tone when he joined the fray for the final 20 minutes.

Leading the way in the profligacy stakes, however, was Arjen Robben, whose trademark move these days seems to be to cut inside then blaze the ball high, wide and not at all handsome.

He did steer one shot against a post in the first half but, other than a stinging Marc van Bommel shot tipped wide by Andersen, the Dutch finishing was distinctly second-rate.

By the end of the opening Group B game the Danish defenders were standing off, almost encouraging the Dutch to unload from distance.

Denmark, in contrast, had eight attempts at goal, all of them on target, including the all-important goal by midfielder Michael Krohn-Dehli after 24 minutes.

“We created an improbable number of chances but if you fail to finish than this happens,” said Dutch coach Bert van Marwijk, whose team now face an uphill battle to get out of a group also containing Germany and Portugal.

MISSING CHANCES

“We lost our power after 70 minutes through our way of playing and also because we kept missing chances.

“Then you have to change your approach of the opponent and we failed to do that.”

It had all started so promisingly as the Dutch attacked from the start in waves and began taking pot shots from all angles.

Unfortunately for their orange-clad fans, who as ever turned up in vast numbers, they flew off at all angles too and, in truth, the Danes were almost untroubled for the final quarter.

Denmark had barely been out of their half when left back Simon Poulsen advanced and his cut-back found Krohn-Dehli rushing goalwards.

His first touch wrong-footed the Dutch defence, allowing him the space to coolly slide the ball between Stekelenburg’s legs.

Krohn-Dehli’s joy was apparent - he was one of five players in Denmark’s stating side with experience of Dutch football and in his case, much of it was bitter.

Despite coming through the ranks as a youth player at Ajax Amsterdam he was never given a chance in the first team and allowed to go on a free transfer. A second spell ended in a similar fashion after four appearances.

USA Vs. Guatemala, 2014 World Cup Qualifying: USMNT Just Barely Hanging On

There is only one thing that matters in World Cup qualifying -- the result. The United States may have been poor all match and an argument can easily be made that Guatemala has been better, but they are just 15 minutes away from three points and in qualifying that is all that matters.

Guatemala is really pouring the pressure on now. They have had the bulk of the chances and have had good ones at that. They just missed the post on several occasions and Marco Pappa forced Tim Howard into a brilliant save to keep this one level. It's been all Guatemala, but zero goals and that is all that matters.

There are 15 minutes left for the U.S. to hold on. They don't need to be good and they don't need to impress. They just need to hold on.

The Fans of Day 3 at Euro 2012

Good games. The vast Oranje Army of Dutch supporters and thousands of Danes sang and shouted their enthusiasm. The huge fan zones in the two cities in the Ukraine were filled with thousands of people in colourful outfits enjoying the party that is a soccer tournament these days.

And yet the dominant theme of media coverage of Euro 2012 – in the English-language media, anyway – has been sour, focusing on brief outbreaks of racist chanting at a handful of events. This has become the Racism Euro, and it’s infuriating for any follower of the game.

The racial abuse of black soccer players shouldn’t happen anywhere.

Mass public enthusiasm over sports teams can surge and twist in bewildering directions, some of it perverse, unleashing the worst of human nature. Large-scale sporting contests have taken on an outsize significance in our culture, and little wonder. In a digital age where we seem so interconnected, the ease of connectivity fools us into thinking we are engaged, but we are not, really.

A terrible irony of the dismay over the racism outbursts at Euro 2012 here in Poland and Ukraine – reports that the Czech Republic’s only black player, Theo Gebre Selassie, was the target of racist chants during the game against Russia; racist abuse aimed at Netherlands players during a training session in Krakow – is that soccer as a sport has worked so hard to erase racism from the game and all attendant areas. Both FIFA, world soccer’s governing body, and UEFA, its European equivalent, have for years engaged in public campaigns to highlight racism as ridiculous in society because race means nothing in soccer. It is the world’s game, one of the few things shared by all races, nationalities and creeds. Year after year, the most famous soccer players in the world make speeches and appear in vast advertising campaigns, using the universality of star players’ popularity and soccer’s appeal, to condemn racism.

Logic would suggest it works. Club teams with players of various nationalities and colours stand as an example of the merits of race-blind unity. National teams that feature players from minorities reinforce and remind people that population patterns change .

It is hard to prove, though. It is far easier to highlight specific incidents of abuse by small groups filled with hate. That’s what the BBC Panorama documentary (about racist chants at certain venues in Poland and Ukraine) which ignited the racism issue at Euro 2012 achieved. Some of those interviewed for the program, mainly those from Poland, have since condemned the program’s generalizations.

Always, when big soccer tournaments unfold, theories abound about soccer’s social role and dynamic. One is about the historical role of the soccer stadium in repressive countries as the sole place for saying the unmentionable in chants and songs – soccer games acting as a tool for the release of submerged attitudes and opinions. In some Arab countries, prior to the Arab Spring, soccer stadiums were where protests against regimes happened. But, clearly, this fact can be double-edged. In former Soviet bloc countries where there is little history of encountering outsiders, hatred of “the other,” of difference itself, is now expressed in soccer stadiums while frowned upon by authority.

But mostly the hate is from small groups. And that too is likely to change as local teams truly become part of the larger soccer world and players of all backgrounds and colours are imported and integrated into teams.

USA Vs. Guatemala, 2014 World Cup Qualifying: Marco Pappa's Brilliant Free Kick Levels

The United States did not really deserve to be ahead after 83 poorly played minutes and now they aren't thanks to Marco Pappa. The Guatemalan hit an absolutely gorgeous free kick up and over the U.S. wall, then dipped it under the bar to beat a helpless Tim Howard. The crowd in Guatemala City exploded and the match was level at 1-1.

The foul was one of many that the U.S. has given away and Guatemala finally took advantage. The free kick was from a tick outside of 20 yards and it was a gem. Pappa should be on every highlight video for that one because it was as well hit as it could have been.

Meanwhile, the U.S. can't feel too hard done. Guatemala has had more chances, has looked more confident and has been the all-around better side. For Guatemala to lose would have been harsh and now they aren't. With seven minutes plus extra time to go now, the U.S. needs to regroup because if any team is going to score a winner it looks like it would be Guatemala.

'England prepared for Euro heat'

England boss Roy Hodgson is confident his players will be well prepared for the heat that could greet them during their opening Euro 2012 game against France in Donetsk on Monday.

The squad made the two-hour flight from their Polish base in Krakow to train on Sunday evening in the Donbass Arena.

Donetsk is forecast to hit a high of 34C on matchday.

Hodgson said: "I have good staff that will be doing everything to rehydrate the players."

The former Switzerland coach added: "Of course temperatures are always a concern but it is a concern in every major tournament.

"I would be very surprised if it gets anything like it was in the World Cup in America with Switzerland in 1994.

"For our first game in the Silverdome it was 34-35 degrees outside. Inside, where the humidity was 91%, the temperatures were supposed to be 41 degrees.

"Then we went to Stanford and played around lunchtime with the sun high above us. The temperature was registering 38C and the sun was beating down. I would be very surprised if it was as hot as that."

USA Vs. Guatemala Final Score, 2014 World Cup Qualifying: Marco Pappa Steals 1-1 Draw

The United States is in pole position to make the hexagonal from their World Cup qualifying third-round group, but they will still be disappointed to walk away from Guatemala with just a draw. The USMNT held a lead for the majority of the second half, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw thanks to a brilliant free kick equalizer from Marco Pappa.

Clint Dempsey scored the United States' goal in the 40th minute, putting the finishing touch on the team's only truly great attacking move in the first half. Fabian Johnson was the architect, providing the assist with a great run up the left flank, then a pass to the feet of Dempsey. He stepped past a defender and placed a low shot into the back of the net at the far post, giving the United States a lead at the end of a poorly played first half.

The United States didn't play much better in the second half, though they did have one good goal disallowed. In the 76th minute, Maurice Edu was hacked down on the edge of the penalty area, but the ball fell to substitute Jozy Altidore, who scored. Unfortunately for him and the USMNT, the goal was called back on a whistle. Inexplicably, the referee failed to play advantage and wiped out the goal.

That would prove to be a key decision seven minutes later, when Pappa netted the equalizer. His free kick came from 25 yards out and completely fooled Tim Howard, who was left standing still as the shot hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced into the goal.

Howard was tested much more than anyone could have expected, and even though the United States had a goal wiped out by a bad call, Guatemala should have scored two or three times before Altidore's disallowed goal. Howard made a number of excellent saves, with his biggest moment coming in the 72nd minute. He made a great save on a set piece, and Carlos Ruiz sent a rebound attempt miles over the crossbar when it would have been easier to hit the target.

Jurgen Klinsmann and the USMNT won't be very pleased with their play, and there will be plenty for the team to work on when they get back together at the end of the summer, but a draw in Guatemala isn't an awful result, and they're still heavy favorites to win the group and comfortably advance to the hexagonal round of qualifying.

German coach Loew makes all the right moves at Euro 2012

Wins and losses at this level are often decided by the width of a crossbar or the length of a through-pass.

Or a simple hunch when it comes to finalizing the lineup.

Germany coach Joachim Loew aced his first real test of these European championship Saturday, putting his neck on the line by picking inconsistent forward Mario Gomez over German legend Miroslav Klose to lead the attack in the opening game against Portugal.

And Gomez, who enjoyed an outstanding 40-goal season with Bayern Munich, repaid that decision in spades with the only goal just as Loew was preparing to take him off for birthday boy Klose.

Hindsight is 20:20 of course, but had Germany failed against Portugal - who hit the crossbar twice - there would have been an in-depth inquest into the decision to leave Klose on the bench. Though recovering from an ankle injury - from which he is fully recovered - Klose boasts one of the best strike rates in the history of soccer with 63 goals in 114 games. He is five goals away from tying Gerd Mueller’s national team scoring record and his 14 goals at the World Cup finals are tied for second most in history, alongside Mueller.

If that wasn’t enough, the Germans have never lost a game in which Klose scored. That streak now spans 40 games - 36 of which have been victories - and the Lazio man has also led the Germans to the final of both the World Cup and the European championship, although he has yet to taste ultimate victory in either tournament.

Gomez, on the other hand, is a poor man’s version of Klose in the eyes of the German public. Though both are good in the air - it was a header that gave Germany a 1-0 win Saturday - Gomez has been less than reliable, particularly in pressure-filled games.

The Bayern frontman enjoyed a sterling campaign for the most part last year, especially in helping his club to the Champions League final. Gomez scored 12 goals in 11 Champions League games - including a four-goal outing against Basel and another three against Napoli in the knockout rounds - but was one of the principal reasons that Chelsea took the trophy on penalties, failing to convert over 120 minutes despite having five attempts on goal in last month’s final.

Similarly he was unable to make an impact in Bayern’s domestic rivalry with league and cup champion Borussia Dortmund, failing to score in either league meeting or in the 5-2 defeat in the cup final.

And despite a respectable strike rate at international level - now 23 goals in 53 games - Gomez is more known in his homeland for his failure to score into an open net from two yards in a Euro 2008 win over Austria.

But perhaps Saturday marks a fresh start. Despite nine appearances now, mostly as a substitute, Gomez’s winner was his first goal in either a World Cup or European championship finals, and he could conceivably have had another before being replaced after 80 minutes.

And it also created another selection headache for Loew. If the German coach thought Saturday’s selection was a head scratcher, just wait until he has to pick his lineup for Wednesday’s crunch game with the Netherlands.

USA Vs. Guatemala, 2014 World Cup Qualifying: Referee Robs USMNT Of A Goal

The United States has to be irate right now because they just scored to go up 2-0 on Guatemala, but the referee waved it off. Instead of counting Jozy Altidore's goal, he whistled for a foul a half-second earlier, apparently unaware of this thing called "advantage."

It was a pretty textbook play. The ball was at the top of the box on Clint Dempsey's foot when he was fouled. The ball squirted free right to Altidore, who was in all alone on goal. He slide the ball into the side netting and goal, right! Wrong. The referee, fixated on the foul blew the whistle, awarded a free kick and did not award the goal. It was exactly why advantage exists, yet the referee decided not to play it for reasons only he knows.

If Guatemala scores, this one is going to sting for the U.S. They should be up 2-0 and instead are just up 1-0.

Pacquiao Vs. Bradley Results: Bob Arum 'Ashamed' Of Boxing Following Decision

Bob Arum isn't the kind of guy who keeps his mouth shut, not when he's happy, not when he's upset and certainly not when his top drawing star loses by controversial decision. And that's exactly what happened to Bob tonight in Las Vegas when Manny Pacquiao was robbed of his deserved victory over Timothy Bradley.

Bad Left Hook points us in the direction of a few tweets that express just how upset Arum (who says he had the fight 10 rounds to 2 for Manny) is about the way things went down:
